April 16 was a busy day for the Spurger Pirates. While the baseball team was preparing for the final games of the season, the track team was at the area competition in Lufkin and the tennis team was in Nacogdoches.
Spurger track made their way to Lufkin to compete in the area level. Robby Clark participated in the 3200 meter run, and 800 meter run. Caleb Winkle also ran in the 3200 meter run and Jayven Fontenont competed to advance in the 200 meter dash. Spurger was also represented in the field events division of the meet by high jumper, Nathan Sheffield, Heith Zoch who took place in shot put, and Coltyn Simon who threw the discus. Although none of the participants finished well enough to advance to the regional meet, bringing such a large group and advancing to area in itself were great accomplishments alone. Considering that all but one of the members still have at least one more year left, the Pirates have high hopes that this year will be used as a stepping stone for success in the years to come.
Spurger's tennis team traveled that same day to Nacogdoches for a tournament. Two boys' singles teams and one boy's doubles team represented the Pirates. Allen Milstead played against a previous state qualifier in boys' singles and lost his match 6-0, 6-2. Cody Winkle played a close match, but unfortunately was not close enough with a loss of 6-4, 6-3. Spurger's boys' doubles team of Austin Ross and Cody Oliver played the number three seed in the state, of Spurger's division. Of the best two of three matches, the boys lost close games of 5-7, 5-7.
Spurger baseball will be playing their final game of this year's season, April 25, in Leggett at 4:30 p.m.
