Woodville man jailed for attempted kidnapping, assault

by Emily Waldrep

Sergeant Lawrance Hicks with the Woodville Police department responded to the 300th Block of Charlton Street on June 19 after receiving reports that a victim was being held at knife point.

Once officers arrived, they saw a male subject in the hallway of an apartment complex holding a knife with the blade out while threatening someone. Officers were able to get the man, identified as Lance Christopher Woodward, age 33, of China, to drop the knife, and he was immediately arrested and secured in a patrol car.

Officers then talked with Woodward's girlfriend, and she said that she and Woodward were in the car when he became agitated and hit her in the head several times and then pulled the knife and began threatening her.

Once she arrived at the house, she left the vehicle and went to a neighbor's house to attempt to call police. Woodward followed her up the stairs into the neighbor's apartment, continuing to threaten her with a knife.

According to Captain Mike McCulley of the Woodville Police Department, Woodward knocked the phone out of his girlfriend's hand while she was attempting to call 9-1-1. Woodward continued to follow the victim while attempting to assault her with the knife.

"The neighbor inside the house also attempted to call police, but Woodward knocked the phone out of the neighbor's hand while they were trying to call 9-1-1," McCulley said. "He continued to try to get the victim."

One resident was able to distract Woodward while they grabbed a cell phone to dial police. During the incident, one of the males inside the residence tried to get between Woodward and his girlfriend and was knocked out of the way by Woodward.

It was later determined that Woodward had a previous arrest for aggravated assault and that he had just been discharged for parole after being in prison for the same type of offense.

Woodward is charged with Attempted Aggravated Kidnapping, Burglary of a Habitation with the Intent to Commit a Felony, Interfering with Emergency 911 Call, and Class C Physical Assault.

He is still in custody with a bond of $702,000.
