Chester Board extends Valedictorian Requirements

by Michael G. Maness

On Tuesday evening, Sept. 17, 6:30 p.m., the Chester ISD board was called to order by President Ray McKnight. A prayer was led by Vernon Lewis, and all pledged their allegiance to the U.S. and Texas flags.

The consent agenda items on finance, bills, tax and bank statements were approved without complication. A donation from the Athletic Booster Club for $807 was approved with grateful hearts. Waivers were also approved to allow staff to use instructional days for staff development classes and instruction.

The board chose to refrain from naming a nominee for the Polk County Appraisal District Board of Directors.

A resolution was passed on tax resales that essentially allowed the school's attorneys to proceed with putting up property for resale because of tax delinquency. When a property owner defaults, usually over a long period of time and sometimes for years, the property is posted at the courthouse for resale consideration. If the owner pays the taxes, the property is freed; if not, the property is auctioned off, the proceeds going to pay the lawyers, the school, city, county and any other entities that were owed taxes.

At a special called board meeting on the Aug. 26th, the board officially changed the valedictorian residency requirements from two to three years. Of the many reasons, the most significant were the class size, precedence in other schools and focusing upon local roots. The honor yields to the recipient a full scholarship for their entire first year at any state university.

Superintendent Wayne Ivey discussed the school's revised mission statement, updating it, noting that the refreshed mission can be seen on the school's website, ChesterISD.com.

The board adjourned in good spirits, reflecting its confident mission of empowering their precious students "to become respectful, creative, and skilled learners who will positively contribute to a growing global society."
