Colmesneil Board accepts superintendent resignation

by Michael G. Maness

Colmesneil ISD Board met July 16. President Jim Carlton called the meeting to order and Board Member Kenneth Adaway led in prayer.

They quickly approved the minutes from the previous month's regular and special meetings and the financial statements. And having just come out of a budget meeting, they also approved the 2013-14 budget.

They discussed at length the I & S tax (Interest and Sinking) on the bonds guided by Superintendent Stacy Ackley, who said they already had approval to go to 18 cents, but were currently at 6 cents, and ought to go to 8 cents; they did not need to vote on that. But for the proposed general tax rate, they would have to bring that to a public vote and should begin to talk to the community about that, in order to stay ahead and keep quality services.

Ackley recommended that the school lunch prices be raised, but the numbers had not come in yet. When they have all the figures in, it will show that some of the newly mandated items will raise the cost, and Ackley said the board needs to consider a price increase up to and not to exceed 25 cents. Action was tabled on that.

The board passed an order for the November election.

Ackley reported on a lot of work, repairs, and floor waxing being done, and that all of it seemed to be on target.

After adjournment to go into a closed session, Ackley gave his resignation and that a letter would be coming. Adaway thanked him for his service and wished him goodwill in his pursuits.

They went into a closed session, according to their published agenda, to consider the applications for interim superintendent, and it was reported afterward that they had chosen Mrs. Yvette Carlton as interim superintendent. Ackley will be going to Royal ISD as superintendent.
