Chester ISD Board meets

by Michael G. Maness

Chester ISD Board met July 15. Board President Ray McKnight opened with a prayer and pledge to the U.S. and Texas flags.

The board approved the minutes from both the previous scheduled meeting and a special session on June 25 that considered resolutions for joint election with both Tyler and Polk Counties, with only slight modifications for the bank signature cards. Also at the special session, probationary contracts were approved for elementary school teacher Dayna Kristine Hickman and secondary English teacher Charisse A. Gardner.

A donation from the Chester Athletic Booster Club of $2,850 was gratefully accepted, and this should help immensely for new football uniforms.

Though tax values have fallen, with a projected loss of about $8 million, Superintendent Ivey allayed fears, in that the state will make that up in adjustments.

Superintendent Ivey reported that the coaches have been busy with athletics, going lots of places, and Coaches Fudge and Moore will be going to the six-man football conference in Lubbock.

Their buses are being serviced, and they have refined their routes. Ivey was pleased to report they will have three routes this coming year, down from four, which will increase efficiency, provide relief for teachers, and even provide room for a substitute.

Gib Lewis prisoners will be waxing the floors, if they are not on lockdown, chuckled Ivey, so thankful for the extra help. The field lockers have been painted and look better. A yellow jacket has been painted on the floor. And if they have the funds, they plan to either wax or refinish the gym floor.

New paint and carpet have been applied to the English classroom.

The football field is being worked on, and they are trying to get the grass ready. But there have been some armadillos tearing things up. Have no fear, they had four traps set up this very evening. No armadillos were going to best these Yellow Jackets!

The board was proud of its students and teachers – go Yellow Jackets!
