Melvin Houston To Be Inducted into PVILCA Hall of Honor

Former Woodville High School head football coach and administrator Melvin Houston will be posthumously inducted into the Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association (PVILCA) Hall of Honor at the 2013 Hall of Honor and Hall of Fame Banquet on July 27, 2013 in Irving, Texas.

The PVILCA celebrates the Prairie View Interscholastic League (PVIL) which was the governing body for academic and athletic competitions for black high schools in Texas from 1920 to 1970. The group merged with the University Interscholastic League (UIL) in 1970.

A graduate of Huston-Tillotson University, Coach Houston served as a football coach for Scott High (Woodville) and Lincoln High School (Port Arthur). He served the bulk of his coaching and administrative career with the Woodville Independent School District (WISD), where he served as an assistant coach, head football coach, head track coach, athletic director and principal from 1970 to 1993, with his wife, former choir teacher Ruth Houston.

Mr. Houston coached several state track champions, won multiple football district championships with WISD, and mentored countless students who continue to practice his ideals of Mentorship, Scholarship, Sportsmanship. His ideals can be seen in the mentorship organization, The Lettermen's Club of WHS which was founded in Coach Houston's honor, in 2009, to assist in building leadership skills in the youth of Woodville, Texas.
