A Woodville man was arrested and charged with evading arrest or detention and injury to a child causing bodily injury after fleeing from a Woodville Police officer on New Years day.
Officer Hicks of the Woodville Police Department was dispatched to a home on Albert Drive in Woodville at approximately 3 p.m. in an effort to locate Brodrick Mitchell, age 24 of Woodville, on a trespassing notice. Hicks met with the residents of the home and while speaking to them he smelled the smell of burning marijuana coming from inside of the home. Consent was granted to search the residence for narcotics.
While searching for narcotics, Hicks noticed that Mitchell was hiding behind a door inside of the home.
"When Hicks tried to make contact with Mitchell, he began running through the hallway of the house, at which point in time he knocked a child down while trying to evade police," said Captain Mike McCulley of the Woodville Police Department. "The child was injured, and the defendant continued to run. After a short foot chase that expanded several blocks, he was apprehended and charged with evading arrest or detention and injury to a child causing bodily injury."
The child was under 5 years of age and suffered various bumps and bruises, including a bruise to the head, but did not require formal medical treatment.
Mitchell was booked into the Tyler County Jail under a bond of $3,000 for evading arrest and $25,000 for injury of the child.
