The Spurger Pirates had many exciting victories in sports this past week. First, Amanda Duvail and Ashley Hollier advanced to the regional competition in doubles tennis. They competed in the district tennis match in Kirbyville on April 1 and 2, and claimed second place in the tournament. Ashley and Amanda will now travel to College Station on April 17-18 to compete in the regional competition.

The girls also won both of their softball games of the week. The softball team beat High Island 16-1 in High Island and 19-12 against Sabine Pass.

"It was a very stressful game," said Duvail. The girls were ahead for two innings, and then Sabine Pass came back and got ahead of the Pirates 10-8 in the third inning. Duvail stepped up to bat and hit an amazing triple and got three runners in. After that hit, the girls all stepped and played as a team to pull off the win. Top players in the game were Amanda Duvail with an infield homerun, two triples, two doubles and three singles; Maddie Fortenbery; Samantha Brinkley and Skeye Hutto. McKenzie McGallion also did an awesome job on the mound

The baseball boys traveled to Sabine Pass for their only game of the week, but lost 11-1. Top players in the game were Brett Bussel, who scored the run for the Pirates; Caleb Lebouf, with two stolen bases; and Hunter Smith, with a double.

The softball and baseball teams will play Big Sandy in Big Sandy on April 10, and a double header against Hull Daisetta on April 13.
