Jackets Entire Tennis Team advancing to Regional Meet

The Chester High School tennis team has had a very successful year so far. Every member of the team has advanced to the regional tournament.

The men's doubles team of Seth Read and Clay Thomson placed first, as did the mixed doubles team of Colten Martin and Annie Rayburn. Cord Neal also placed first in the men's singles division. Selah Spaulding placed second in the women's singles division, and the team of J.T. Martin and Ashlyn Overstreet came in second in mixed doubles. The regional tournament will be held on April 18-19 in Georgetown at Georgetown High School.

The Chester track team competed in the Rainey Relays at Evadale High School on Thursday, March 30. The 800m relay team of Jaqualin George, Michael Castleberry, Caleb Sitting and Colten Martin came in fourth place. The 1600m relay team of Castleberry, Sittig, Martin, and Cord Neal came in third place. Danique Davis placed sixth in the long jump, and Ashlyn Overstreet placed fifth in the discus. Faith Loughner came in fifth place in the 100m hurdles and Amory Parker came in third in the 300m hurdles. Neal placed first in the triple jump, fourth in the long jump, and sixth in the 400m dash. Dane Barnes placed first in the 3200mrun and first in the 1600m run. Annie Rayburn placed first in the 1600m run and second in the 3200m run.

The Yellowjacket track team will travel to Deweyville for their last meet before district on Thursday, April 6.

The Chester Lady Jacket softball team played in Big Sandy on Tuesday, March 28. Despite some good hits by Haley Cowan, Faith Loughner, Belle Gilzow, Meagan Clarke, and Donna Martin, the Lady Jackets fell to the Lady Wildcats 2-12. Clarke drove in one run in the second inning with a grounder and Gilzow drove in the other run in the third inning with a hit to left field.

Head Coach Jeremy Wooten said, "The girls played much better. We've got some things to work on, but we are improving for the play-off push."

The Lady Jackets will have Friday off, and will play in Zavalla on Tuesday, Aprill 11 at 6 p.m.

The Chester baseball team defeated Zavalla on Tuesday, March 28 with a score of 14-8. Cord Neal led the Jackets with four hits, seven stolen bases, and five RBI's. Seth Read pitched four innings for the Jackets, getting the win with six strike outs. Chester grabbed an early lead as Clay Thomson laid down a sacrifice bunt to score a run in the first inning.

The Jackets scored five runs in the second inning with hits from Avery Wade, Neal, Thomson, and Read. The Jackets added two more runs in the third inning thanks to hits by Colten Martin, J.D. Clarke, Jake Pitre, Wade, and Neal.

The Jackets added three more runs in the seventh inning with hits from Cader Powell, Neal, and Thomson.

The Jackets will travel to Pineland to face the West Sabine Tigers on Saturday, April 8 at noon. Then, on Tuesday, April 11, the Jackets will travel to Brookeland for a 6 p.m. game.
