The Woodville Lady Eagles entered the final week of the summer league with a record 6-0. The top-seeded Eagles and the second seeded Big Sandy Lady Wildcats earned a bye in the first round of Championship Week held at the Eagle Summit. In the first round, the third seeded Warren Lady Warriors defeated sixth Colmesneil to advance to the semi-finals. Fourth seeded Burkeville's varsity defeated their fifth seeded JV to advance as well. Woodville had little difficulty in the 30-18 defeat of Warren to advance to the championship game. Burkeville appeared to run away with their game against Big Sandy. Burkeville led 36-27 with 2 minutes left in the game. The Lady Wildcats from Big Sandy finished on a 10-2 run, but it wasn't enough as Burkeville advanced to the finals to face Woodville.
Woodville opened the finals with an early 4-0 lead before Burkeville went on a 5-0 run to take the 5-4 lead. This would be the only lead of the night as Karlea Greaff scored a lay-up to go up 6-5 with 14:53 left in the first half. Greaff's basket would start the Lady Eagles on a 15-0 run that ended on a Burkeville jump shot with 3:34 left in the half. Burkeville finished the half on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 21-13 at half time.
Both team's defenses opened the second half preventing each other from scoring for four minutes until Shawnacy Williams stole the ball and hit a five foot jump shot to take the 23-13 lead. Woodville would score the next three points before Burkeville scored four in a row to narrow the lead to 28-17 with 8:17 left in the game. Maura Fentress hit a long jump shot to take a thirteen point lead with 7:01 left in the game. Both teams battled back and forth, but it was the Lady Eagles who came up victorious 32-21. Coach Troy Carrell was excited about winning the championship. "I am really glad we won, but I am most impressed with the team chemistry. The girls played great together and they played hard."
The weight room will continue to be open for the Eagles and Lady Eagles Monday thru Thursday.
