Watts leads Eagles past Tarkington

The Woodville Eagles defeated Tarkington 2-0 behind both the arm and bat of junior Jacob Watts. Watts held the Longhorns hitless through five innings walking two and striking out seven. Watts reached base three times for the Eagles including a single in the second inning.

Senior Charles Fentress closed the game giving one hit and striking out five for the save. Junior Marqui Jackson led the Eagles with a pair of hits including one double. Chase Hensarling joined Watts with two walks at the plate.

The varsity baseball team will host its annual tournament Thursday through Saturday, before traveling to Silsbee on Tuesday.

Softball season has also started their season. Freshman Shelby Mixon had three extra base hits, helping the Lady Eagles to an 8-4 victory over the Shepherd Pirates at Kit McConnico Field. Mixon doubled in the first, third, and fourth innings. Avery Tolar added two more hits as the pair combined for six of Woodville's RBIs. Morgan Poncho received the win for the Lady Eagles, as she gave up four runs on four hits. Poncho walked one and struck out four in her five innings of work.

Shepherd opened the top of the first inning scoring a pair of runs to take an early 2-0 lead. It didn't take long for the Eagles to answer on Mixon's two run double in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at 2-2. Woodville gained the lead in the fourth inning on another Mixon two run double and a RBI single by Faith Sirmons. Woodville pushed two more runs across in the fifth inning.

The win improves Woodville's record to 5-1 on the young season.

The Lady Eagle golf team will tee off in Wildwood,Tuesday and the middle school track teams will travel to Huntington for the start of track season.
