Tuesday, February 18, Spurger competed in the first round of playoffs for the season. The game was a rematch for the Pirates, when they faced Oakwood for the second year in a row. With have lost so closely last year, the boys were anxious for another shot. Unfortunately for Spurger, once again, the win was not in their favor.
For the first quarter, Spurger defense was on top of their game, only allowing Oakwood 15 points against them. Although they were successful in that area, Spurger only made six points on the offensive side. The second quarter, Spurger then stepped it up, scoring 15 points, thanks to three pointers from Caleb LeBouef, Caleb Winkle, and Nathan Sheffield. For the second half, both teams were very successful at pushing the ball up the court, but the points were not falling as they were for Oakwood. The tired Pirates, although they scored 15 points in both the third and fourth quarters, could not keep up with Oakwood. Despite the loss, the Pirates played a hard fought match. Sheffield led the team in points with 15 points, followed by LeBouef who put up 13. Seniors, Cody Winkle, Heath Zoch and Michael Reyna all scored as well for their last game. Winkle put up seven points, Zoch made one of his two free throws of the fourth quarter, and Reyna hit two free throws. The game ended at 76-51.
With basketball officially over, baseball and softball are breaking out. The Pirates baseball and softball teams will both be playing in Hull Daisetta at 4:30 p.m.
