January 21 was a big game for the Pirates that resulted to be well worth the watch. Both the Pirates and Lady Pirates played Leggett in Spurger for their last time of the season. For the boys, they had to get the win, or they would no longer have a chance for a playoff spot.
Knowing the game was important, the boys were expected to come out with a fire to sweep Leggett away, but when Pilgreen's two points were the only scored for the Pirates during the first quarter it seemed otherwise. Down 2-14, it looked as if Spurger was in for a long game, and could kiss the playoffs goodbye. After what seemed to be a wakeup call for the boys, they came out in the second quarter ready to fight back. Cody Winkle opened them up with a three pointer, followed by Sheffield's two point drive. Spurger then caught a rhythm and points fell in their favor. Caleb Winkle put up another two, Clark made two points and Cody Winkle and Sheffield both put up another three pointer. Now only down 20-27, Spurger seemed hopeful for a win. In the third quarter, Spurger outscored Leggett making 22 points to their 16, which caught Spurger up to a one point game of 42-43. Since the game was of such an importance to the team and momentum was in their favor, Spurger took complete control of the fourth quarter. Spurger's players hit four three pointers, three of which were made by Caleb Winkle, and one by Sheffield. With a score of 58, for Spurger, Leggett began fouling in hopes of getting the possession and win, but failed to do so. Caleb Winkle and Sheffield scored a combined score of nine free throws at the end of the game. Spurger came out with the win of 67-63. Caleb Winkle reached his season high, as well as led the team in points, with 28 points.
Both the Lady Pirates and Pirates play Friday, January 31, against High Island in Spurger at 4:30. They will also be playing February fourth in Chester. This will be the girl's last game of the season.
