Warren Lady Warriors defeat Kirbyville

Connor Fry drives to By: Katie McCluskey  On Tuesday, January 14, both the JV and varsity Warriors and Lady Warrior basketball teams played against the Kirbyville Wildcats. The JV Lady Warriors played a great game and defeated Kirbyville. The JV Warriors also defeated Kirbyville with an excellent amount of hustle. The varsity Lady Warriors fought hard to beat the Lady Wildcats, which was well worth the effort as they defeated Kirbyville 30-20. The varsity Warriors played their best as well. The varsity Lady Warriors took the lead early in the first quarter and extended it throughout the game. Just within the first quarter Molly Applewhite scored a three pointer, Bergandie Conner scored, Ashlynn Whisneant scored, and Lauren Foster made a free throw. The Lady Warriors also played well defensively, Conner, Foster, Applewhite, and Chelsea Gordon all had a steal. The Lady Warriors ended the first quarter leading 8-2. Early in the second quarter Applewhite scored another three pointer, making the score 11-2. Devan Barnett worked hard offensively which lead to an easy layup that made the score 13-4. Applewhite was fouled while shooting a three pointer and made two of her free throws. Applewhite then had a steal and a layup. The Lady Warriors were leading 17-4. Foster had an offensive rebound. Warren ended the first half of the game ahead 17-4. In the beginning of the third quarter Gordon had a steal. Conner made a free throw, making the score 18-6. Foster had an excellent three point play as she made a shot, drew a foul, and made her free throw. Gordon continued to hustle on defense and earned another steal. Foster scored yet again for the Lady Warriors. At the end of the third quarter Warren was still leading 23-14. Barnett scored the first point of the fourth quarter with a free throw. Whisneant then scored, making the score 26-18. Barnett made another free throw and Applewhite made two free throws. Warren was still ahead 29-20. Barnett scored the last point of the game with yet another free throw. The Lady Warriors defeated Kirbyville 30-20. The JV and varsity Warriors and JV and Lady Warriors traveled to Woodville on Friday, January 17. The JV Lady Warriors were unable to beat the Lady Eagles and lost. The JV Warriors played a tough game against Woodville. The varsity Lady Warriors put forth a great amount of effort, but lost. The varsity Warriors played an excellent game. The Warriors fought hard throughout the entire game and were able to defeat the Eagles 50-47. Both the JV and varsity Warriors and Lady Warriors will take on the Kountze Lions at home on Friday, January 24. The teams will travel to Newton on Tuesday, January 28.
