On January 10, the varsity Spurger Pirates played the Chester Yellow Jackets, for a district game. This game was the first district game since the Christmas break, and Spurger competed very well.
The varsity girls had a tough game, that grew to be very intense on both sides of the court. After the first half, the Yellow Jackets had a 10 point lead on Spurger, 28-18. E.Shumake lead the team in points, for the first half. With seven points, two of which were three pointers and a free throw, she helped dig the girls out of a deep hole. During the third quarter, J.Shumake fouled out making the game a little tougher on the girls, but they continued to play hard. LeBouef got a block and Wood came away with a few steals. Although they lost, with a score of 33-52, the girls did very well. E.Shumake finished with a total of eleven points. Wood ended with six points, McLeod with five, and LeBouef with three.
The boys came away with a win of 60-17. The Spurger Pirates blew Chester out, with several steals, blocks, and assists from nearly each player. Sheffield led the team with 15 points, and LeBouef was directly behind with 14. Caleb Winkle ended the game with eight points and 100 percent from the line, when he made six of six free throws. Pilgreen also had eight points for the Pirates. Cody Winkle came away with six, followed by Ross who had five. Clark and Hyden finished with two.
