Spurger boys compete during Christmas break

by Kelsey Sheffield

Throughout the Christmas break, Spurger's varsity boy basketball team continued to compete to stay prepared to resume their district season. The Pirates participated in the Kirbyville tournament, as well as a scrimmage against Sabine Pass.

On December 30-31 the boys played in the tough Kirbyville tournament. The Pirate's first game was against the Kirbyville Wildcats. Kirbyville's assistant coach, Coach Chad Odom, was Spurger's head boys basketball coach last year, so it was interesting as to how the game would play out. Spurger started out extremely slow, when they ended the first quarter with only two points to Kirbyville's 14. The second quarter kept the same pattern, when the half ended with a brutal score of 25 - 7. After experiencing such a tough half, the Pirates had a wake up call and began to play like they wanted to win. Simon helped get the momentum going when he deflected a pass for Sheffield to pick up and make a fast break layup. Pilgreen also came to play, getting two defensive rebounds and one offensive rebound. Spurger scored a well earned 10 points in each of the third and fourth quarters , but it wasn't quite enough to surpass the Wildcat's score to take the win. Sheffield led the team in points with 11 points, which were five hard drives to the basket, one of which, he knocked down the free throw to create a three point play. Clark scored the most points as a varsity member that he has scored all season with eight points. He stepped up and knocked down two much needed 3-pointers and also scored a layup. Along with the rebounds, Pilgreen also managed six points on the board. He finished 50 percent from the line and two jump shots. Ross was also 50 percent from the free throw line, which gave him two points. Oliver contributed steals to the team to help create scoring opportunities.

Spurger varsity boys also lost to the Sabine Pass Sharks in overtime, but are well prepared to continue district play. The junior varsity boys, varsity girls, and varsity boys will be playing in Spurger, January 10, at 4:30 p.m. against Chester. They will be playing January 14, in Spurger against Premier Academy.
