The Spurger Pirate's Varsity boys and girls competed in the Evadale Tournament from Dec. 5-7. Although neither team placed, the Pirates done very well. The Varsity boys made it to the consolation game, when they lost to Lumberton JV.
Thursday, Dec. 5, both of Spurger's teams started out slow in the tournament with a loss. The girls had a tough loss against Trinity and the boys lost to the Vidor Pirates. With both teams placed in the losing bracket, they both were to play a rival, Warren Warriors. Spurger's Varsity girl's basketball coach, Coach Moore, was Warren's previous coach until this year. Although the girls came short of a win, the Spurger boys beat the Warriors with a score of 67-60. The game was a close one, with several points on the board from many of the Pirates. Nathan Sheffield led the boys with 22 points, which were made up of seven free throws, three 2-point range shots, and three 3-pointers. Next to lead the team was Cody Winkle with 17. Winkle was one-hundred percent from the free throw line, with six made free-throws. He also scored four 2-pointers and one 3-point shot. The younger Winkle, Caleb Winkle, followed behind with 10 points which consisted of one free throw and three 3-pointers from his hot streak in the second quarter. LeBouef and Pilgreen both scored 7 points. LeBouef was seventy-five percent from the line with three out of four free throws, along with two 2-point buckets. Pilgreen had one layup along with four made free throws. Hyden also put up a 3-pointer and Oliver made a free throw. All of the boys contributed many steals for the Pirates which was a huge asset in winning. Saturday was not as good for Spurger when both teams lost. The Lady Pirates played well but were unsuccessful against the Kirbyville Lady Wildcats and the boys lost the consolation game against Lumberton Raider JV.
The Pirate's JV boys will be playing in the Woodville JV Tournament Dec. 12-14. The Junior High eighth grade boys and girls will be playing in Spurger against Chester at 4:30. The Varsity boys will have their first district game Tuesday, Dec, 17, when they and the Lady Pirates travel to Legget where Head Basketball Coach, Coach Sloan, previously coached, before coming to Spurger.
