The Pirates had games back to back on November 25 and 26, before taking their Thanksgiving break.
On November 25, both the Pirates and Lady Pirates played the Cherino Owls. Although neither of the teams came out with a win, the varsity boys made the games worth it. Spurger started out well, with points on the board from several players. Caleb Winkle, Cody Oliver, Austin Ross and Nathan Sheffield all scored for the Pirates. In the first quarter, the Pirates were down by two with a score of 10-12. By the end of the half, the Pirates were still down, but by four points. In the second quarter, five free throws were made. Four were made by David Pilgreen, who made 100 percent for the half. Sheffield and Caleb Winkle led the team for the half with six points each while Pilgreen followed with four. Cody Winkle and LeBouef each scored three followed by Oliver and Ross with two each. The second half continued on neck and neck and the Pirates gradually were catching up. With 4:10 left in the third quarter, Cody Winkle hit a tough two point range jumper for Spurger to take the lead. Unfortunately for the Pirates, Cherino made steals and rebounds to quickly gain the lead back to finish the quarter 30-42. The fourth started out with much tension. By this time, two of the Pirates, Ross and Clark, had to take the bench due to minor ankle injuries and two of Cherino's players fouled out. Spurger kept themselves in the game by nine points in the fourth by LeBouef, four of which were free throws as well as one three pointer and one two point shot. Cody Winkle, Sheffield, and Hyden also all contributed points, but it wasn't enough for the win. The final score was 54-56. The boys also lost by two in over-time to West Hardin, after a brutal rivalry game.
The Pirates will be playing again December 5-7 in the Evadale tournament. Both the varsity boys and girls will be competing on December 10. The varsity girls will be playing their first district game at Premier Academy at 6 p.m. The junior varsity and varsity boys will be playing the same night in Kennard at 6 p.m. as well. On December 9 the junior high seventh and eighth grade boys and girls will be playing in Hull-Daisetta at 4:30 p.m.
