Eagles - Wildcats battle to end

by Jason Drake

The Woodville Eagles hosted the Splendora Wildcats to open the season at the Woodville Middle School gym. The game was moved to the middle school due to construction in the summit. The Eagles seem to have a mixture of experience as Woodville suited up four seniors and four freshmen on the fourteen man roster.

Splendora opened the game winning the first quarter 14-10. The game battled back and forth in the second quarter with each team scoring 14 apiece. The Eagles outscored Splendora in the third to knot the game up at 35-35. Woodville managed to open the lead by four with three minutes left in the game. The Wildcats went on an 8-0 streak to take a 48-43 lead with 1:30 in the game. The Eagles scored the last four points of the game but it wasn't enough as Woodville dropped the game 48-47.

Marqui Jackson and Ashton Lockhart were the leading scorers for the Eagles with 12 points apiece. Jamal added eight, while Tyler Conner chipped in six. The Eagles shot 63% from the free throw line, highlighted by Horn's 4-4 shooting from the charity stripe. Lockhart was also the team leader in assists with four. Freshman Kris Traylor handled business down low with a team high seven rebounds. Derrick Daffron blocked two shots. Woodville will return to action on December 3, when they travel to Diboll to take on the Lumberjacks.

While the boys were in a tight game, the Lady Eagles wasted no time in rolling over the West Sabine Lady Tigers. Woodville opened up a 20-2 lead in the first quarter and cruised the rest of the way to a 51-28 win. JuLisa Williams led all scorers with 15 points and McKenzie McGallon poured in another 12 points. Mallory Watts dished out three assists and JuLisa pulled down nine rebounds. Shawnacy Williams applied defensive pressure forcing six steals. Woodville will travel to Jasper on Tuesday to take on 3A Jasper. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. for the JV followed by the varsity.

The Middle School Eagles will play Corrigan on Monday. The boys will travel to Corrigan, while the Lady Eagles will be home. Games are set to begin at 5:00.
